Aashayam was started in 2008 by Mrs. Lakshmi Kumari, a parent of a special child. Their mission is to make the children feel self-confident and keep them occupied in daily activities. Aashayam mainly provides vocational training and employment for about 30 underprivileged young adults and adults, along with parent counselling. The centre is located in the ground floor of a two-storied house, with a sand pit, physio equipment, school bus and a playground nearby. The vocational training provided include making paper bags, gel candles, scented candles, regular candles, diyas, photo frames, glass paintings, embroidery and watering plants in the garden. Aashayam pays the vocational unit students for their effort in making products, based on their eligibility and contributions. Aashayam has also placed a few students in small jobs according to their abilities. NIMH does routine IQ assessment of the students and Sai Teja Krishna foundation supports Aashayam to conduct medical camps for regular monitoring of students health.
