What measures to take when you spot a wandering child/adult with disabilities? It is entirely possible that a child/adult with different needs may have trouble with social interaction and communication. Under these situations it becomes your prerogative as a citizen to help ensure the child/adult’s safety by contacting the concerned authorities in a timely manner.

Wandering away from home or school is a common problem amongst high risk children and adults (those with intellectual disability/ cognitive / social / communication) and can have life-threatening consequence.

Signs to look for:
1. Is the child/adult without an adult companion?
2. Is he/she not making eye contact, unable to speak clearly?
3. Does he/she look disorientated/restless, in need of help?

What can you do?

  • Comfort the person, however try to avoid physically touching him/her
  • Call 100 for Police or 1098 for Child line (child helpline); wait with the person till help arrives
  • Take the person to the nearest police station
